"Public investment" vs "Wasteful Subsidy." The only problem with this clever classic Singer cartoon is that some people might not get that it’s illustrating the perception problem, NOT telling the truth. Just in case it actually needs to be said, the truth is the opposite.

Had a great family day on our bikes/scooter today! Supported a local nursery and rode home with veggie plants for our summer garden, two bags of compost and a new stone fruit tree!

Never forget, it doesn’t take much to add some smiles to your city. Just a culture of fun and creativity, or at least a culture of not getting in the way of fun and creativity. Is that YOUR city? #CityOfSmiles #FunCity

Beautiful Sunday morning on @SFBart. Car is full with people getting around the Bay Area. All of us will be stranded if we let transit fall off the #fiscalcliff. We elected Gavin Newsom to support housing and transit. Get it done! #FundTransit

With 58% of all trips nationally made by bike, teenagers are among the biggest beneficiaries of Dutch infrastructure. From a young age, they enjoy the freedom of a driver’s license; without the added stress, cost and danger. The scene outside our son’s high school this morning.

If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via The Discourse study. This isn’t just about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice. #citymakingmath

Davis is having a bit of a moment here with three big mixed-use projects within 4 blocks proposed using SB 330 and the City's new form-based downtown specific plan. It's an impressive example of how permissive, form-based zoning and by right approvals with no CEQA yields results.

Most cities are built on the assumption that everyone can drive a car forever. But for the first 16-18 and final 7-10 years of our lives, and for those without the physical or financial means, it is impossible; excluding people from society in many ways. urbanismspeakeasy.com/film

Reminder that the term “jaywalking” was propagated by auto industry lobbyists to demonize people walking in streets, as they have done for thousands of years, in order to monopolize the space for cars.

It’s REALLY important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally AGAINST downtown bike-lanes, later became one of their most vigourous supporters, because of EVIDENCE that bike-lanes are better for downtown business than any street parking they replace.

DIRECTNESS is one of five design principles Dutch planners use to build successful cycling networks. It means always offering the straightest route possible, with deviations not exceeding 20 percent of the total travel distance; often ensuring a shorter journey than with a car.

Six year olds walking home from school, on their own, is one of those things the rest of the world understands as normal but the US sees as criminal

Paris now has 180 gorgeous ‘school streets.’ They are pedestrianized and landscaped streets around schools - to mitigate crashes, prioritize walking to school, reduce noise and air pollution. No brainer, really.

Twitter hasn’t heard the story of how I, an SUV owning EMT, became the safe streets advocate I am today. 🧵 I became an EMT in late 2018. I owned and drove an SUV, and was pretty ambivalent about infrastructure and safe streets (sometimes maybe even skeptical).

While some cities wait for technology to “save” them, others like Utrecht are making their streets cleaner and greener with 150-year-old inventions. Simple and effective ways to address our myriad crises have long existed, if we are willing to look back in order to move forward.
