The interim Superintendent has suspended the principal and another staff member responsible for the profoundly racist and wildly inappropriate segregated assembly. The chaotic web of harms being inflicted on students and families in Florida continues.

For far too many transgender and gender nonconforming youth, school serves as their only safe haven.  We have to protect that. We have to ensure our schools are sanctuaries for every single student.

Except this timeline is wrong, also. Segregation and discrimination were legal until 1968. The Supreme Court ruled in Brown in 1954 but segregation was still allowed across American life and enforcement of Brown didn’t come for a full decade.

I’m reading Rachel Maddow ‘s new book and a key takeaway for me is: our failure to teach about fascist movements throughout American history keeps leaving us vulnerable to their resurgence.
