Smart people think they understand the blockchain, but they don't. Blockchains are socially enforced networks. In proof of stake networks, if someone takes over and just mines empty blocks, everyone can fork anew and remove the evil doer. Social consensus backed by cryptography.

Proof of work doesn't have such a nice feature actually. In Bitcoin for instance, if some evil created or acquired much more sha256 hashrate than honest actors, they could mine empty blocks forever, and if you forked to a new hash algo, they could likely dominate that too. Proof
