My great-great grandfather was a runaway from Virginia who knew how to read and write. After the war, he emerged in Georgia and donated land to build a church and school. He and my great-great aunts were the first teachers. Fugitive pedagogy is literally in my DNA. 👊🏾

Let’s stop this. It’s not an either/or. The colors and flags represent different things. I am a proud Black American with roots in U.S. soil and a proud Pan-Africanist Afrodescendant. Respect that we are multifaceted. Respect the Juneteenth flag ❤️🤍💙 and the UNIA flag ❤️🖤💚.

This wasn’t about unity but capitalism and arrogance. Juneteenth has its own flag, own colors, and its own ethno-cultural significance. Why not support celebrations in your area led by Black Americans? That’s what we do for Labor Day. This mess doesn’t honor me or my ancestors.

It’s undeniable that #Juneteenth has connections to the Caribbean and Mexico because Black folks have always migrated and networked transnationally. Yet, this doesn’t change the U.S. roots of the holiday and need to respect BA culture. Jouvert is not Juneteenth.
