I never understood the knee-jerk and far too frequent tendency to minimize and belittle a freedom movement on here. Nonetheless, protest - of all different varieties - still ongoing after 6 months.

To be fair, Mamdani didn’t issue a statement like this til the end of this race. He did so bc Cuomo—a disgraced & desperate ex-NY governor—made his closing gambit an attack on his ethnicity & religion. Mamdani’s statement was confident, not whiny: “from shadows to light.” 1/2

Iran’s President Pezeshkian says he has tasked the interior minister to talk to “representatives of protesters” to help realize their demands. This is pretty much unprecedented but let’s see what form it takes. Notably, he doesn’t control the security forces.

I cannot stress enough that the situation in Iran is entirely unpredictable. The protests, and whatever second and third order effects they trigger, can lead in drastically different directions. The regime could survive another decade, or fall tomorrow, neither would surprise me.

Remarkable: Molavi Abdul Hamid, an Iranian Baluchi/Sunni leader, addressed authorities today: "You saw the uprising of the people and heard the voice of the nation. If a few years ago I said referendum, today I say surrender to the demands of the nation and yield to them."
