Tim Bond Tim Bond gave a great talk today explaining his work with Kevin Lang on the issues we need to consider when studying outcomes with no natural scaling. journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.108…

Anne Case and Angus Deaton spent the day at Purdue. The data they presented clearly shows an increase in the mortality rate for those without a college degree. It is driven by suicide, drug overdose, and alcohol abuse. They claim the despair is driven by unfairness in the market.

Tim Moore did a wonderful job facilitating the discussion of a large group of undergrad students with Case and Deaton. The next session for faculty and grad students was even better. Their obvious care for the students was inspiring. I really enjoy my job as an economist.

Freakonomics podcast about student debt and income share agreements (ISAs). I’ve been studying the Purdue program. My view is that ISAs do not increase college access, but may increase college completion. See Ep. 377 freakonomics.com/podcast/studen… via Freakonomics

This New York Times opinion piece on ISAs points out that if they only provide college funding to high-ability students, there may be general equilibrium effects. The program I'm studying does not select on grades, but does price discriminate on major. nyti.ms/2HccAc9

Just spent two weeks with a group of Purdue undergrads on a study abroad in Buenos Aires. I’m impressed at how hard they worked. We covered a full semester of econometrics in just two weeks and explored the city. I’m exhausted.

This is a short summary of Tim Bond’s JPE article that was just recently published. My view is that it’s going to change the entire field of happiness research.

Through income share agreements (ISA), students pay for their education as a percentage of their post-grad income rather than a flat up-front charge or a conventional loan where they are on the hook for a fixed monthly payment regardless of what they’re earning. I sat down with
