We’re excited to welcome you to the site tomorrow, Saturday, November 18!

Please note that the November 18 hours of operation are 10:00am – 1:00pm.

Beginning in the 1890s, African Americans from South Carolina, Georgia, & North Florida began moving to Jupiter. They sought new land, opportunities, & freedom from the oppression of Jim Crow. Their homesteads formed a community that endures today as Limestone Creek.

This photo was recently donated to us; the individual/location are unidentified. We think this is likely Henry Spencer Jackson, a banker/bookkeeper in NY & NJ. He moved to the Jupiter area in 1907 where he was elected Justice of the Peace & worked as bookkeeper for the Pennocks.

In 1974, Eleanor Fletcher became only the 6th person, & 1st woman, ever licensed by Florida to handle & rehabilitate sea turtles. “The Turtle Lady of Juno Beach” raised awareness & public interest about these endangered animals. Fletcher founded what is today the Loggerhead Marinelife Center.

The first Girl Scout camp on the Loxahatchee opened in 1928. Originally known as Camp Schaumahatchee, it was wrecked by a hurricane during that same year. Camp Welaka opened in 1959.
