Seth Appert said this morning shot volume will be a priority on the power play. Seconds into their first of the night, Jack Quinn shoots from up high and JJ Peterka scores a deflection for the Sabres' first goal of the preseason. 1-1.

Sabres' new additions showed their identity early. Nicolas Aube-Kubel delivered a hard hit along the boards seconds into his first shift. Beck Malenstyn drew the high-sticking penalty that preceded JJ Peterka's power-play goal on the following shift.

Sabres and Penguins are tied 1-1 after 20 minutes. Sabres lead 17-7 in shots and took the lead on a power-play goal from JJ Peterka.

JJ Peterka has his second goal of the game, a shot from the left circle that beat Joel Blomqvist to the far side. Sabres lead 2-1 early in the 2nd period.

JJ Peterka has the hat trick, this one a deflection of a Tage Thompson shot from the point. That's 5 goals by the Sabres through the first 5:26 of the period! Most have followed the same recipe - shoot from up high, crash the net. Sabres lead 6-1.

Dylan Cozens buries a one-timer from a sharp angle for the Sabres' 7th goal of the night. Zach Benson and Jack Quinn combined to force a turnover on the forecheck to set up the chance.
