PM nutritional ecology session opens with Ecological Entomology EiC Dr. Sheena Cotter. Starving insects die faster when infected, but infected insects choose more protein and do better. Protein reduces bacterial load, but because it hinders bacterial growth, not heightened immune response. #ice2024

If you're interested in becoming an Associate Editor for Agricultural and Forest Entomology and want to know more, come chat with me or Chris Ranger throughout #ICE2024! We'll also be at the 'pitch a paper' session at the Royal Entomological Society stand during Thursday's poster session to talk about AFE.

Chris Ranger, one of our EiCs, gave a great talk on ambrosia beetle colonisation. Ethanol & acetic acid emitted by stressed trees attract ambrosia beetles. More tunnelling & colonisation with more ethanol & acetic acid. X-ray microtomography reveals internal structures. #ice2024

Super cool findings! This unlocks a world of possibilities for constructing interaction networks from historical collections. Very pertinent to many of the topics discussed at #ice2024 so far!

One of our trustees Prof Seirian Sumner opens the social insect session! Genes and their expression are associated with caste, but the genes differ with social complexity. Genome 'juggling' doesn't clearly predict sociality but superorganismal specie genomes are well conserved. #ICE2024

Great talk from Patry Ortega-Ramos at #ICE2024! Cabbage stem flea beetle devastates oilseed rape! Sowing date, field size and weather affect CSFB distribution but we lack control. CSFB development differs between crop lines, but varies over time. CSFB parasitism rates change annually.
