As I've said here before, we do not prevent suicide by 'assessing for safety.' That's a lawyer's worldview, or an administrator's

We prevent suicide by creating a meaningful human connection where patients feel seen, heard, and understood in a relationship where they matter

3/ The practical effect of “therapy speak”(boundaries, journeys, self-care, self-love, gaslighting, triggered, journeys, narcissists, blah blah) is to turn therapy into the equivalent of a horosope—it resonates, sounds like it applies to you personally, but there’s no substance

When every mental health problem has the same explanation, you know you’ve left the realm of professional expertise & entered realm of ideology

If you think about it, there’s really no need to get to know the patient—because it will be same explanation & solution no matter what

If you need to paint someone else as villain in order to paint yourself as the good guy...

maybe you are not, in fact, the good guy

When ppl speak in clichés, it indicates psychological defenses at work. Something is being denied/avoided

Ironic that today’s clichés are often 'therapy speak.” Boundaries, self-care, self-love, gaslighting, triggered, journeys, narcissists, blah blah

This is not self-awareness

Anything prepackaged and promoted as a solution for anyone/everyone is a product.

Meaningful psychotherapy is a unique relationship with a unique individual who must be understood on their own terms. It cannot 'scale.' There is therefore no product to promote and sell.

This could usefully be included in every psychotherapy & counselling training as a workshop entitled Mythbusting: What Therapy is Not 👇🏼

11/
-Seems more concerned with your diagnosis than understanding you as a person
-uses material from therapy sessions to promote themselves on social media
-claims to know what’s wrong & how to help you within minutes of meeting (or from a phone call even before meeting you)

When every mental health problem you encounter has the same explanation, you know you’ve left the realm of professional expertise & entered the realm of ideology

When you think about it, there’s really no need to see the patient at all because it would literally change nothing

When you think you’re both tallking about psychology, only to realize they’re interested only in politics and ideology

1/ I made a list a while ago, about therapy🚩 that should make you think long & hard about whether you’re seeing right therapist

Starting another, please add

-agrees with nearly everything you say
-diagnoses people in your life
-gives you advice
-mawkish displays of “empathy'

The focus of so many social media therapy “influencers' is self.

Self-help. Self-love. Self-care. Self-talk. Self-healing.

Self self self self.

Far too often, it is the very disease it purports to cure👇

'The suicide rate in the United States recently reached its highest peak since 1941.'

We're not just recognizing and diagnosing more mental illness; people are also more likely to die due to a mental illness.

We have a mental health crisis.
