"This Bill now has the support of federal politicians of very different political stripes and every state and territory govt in the Basin, with the exception of Victoria. The fact that the Vic govt remains opposed will disappoint millions of Victorians." — Jono La Nauze

The Restoring our Rivers Bill passed through the Senate today. Along with allies we fought hard to secure important changes to the Water Act, plus funding and programs that will underpin improved water justice for First Nations in the Basin! 🧵

When the Bill was submitted to Parliament, there was NOTHING to address First Nations interests outcomes. MLDRIN worked with 💚🌏 Sarah Hanson-Young, Senator Lidia Thorpe David Pocock and key allies to push for inclusion of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People

💚🌏 Sarah Hanson-Young Senator Lidia Thorpe David Pocock We presented to the Inquiry into the Bill, chaired by Senator Karen Grogan, which delivered some powerful recommendations that backed our key demand about UNDRIP and extra funding for First Nations water ownership, and funding for a Cultural Flows Program. aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_…

While the media may print this nonsense, most people aren't buying it. Yesterdays Bill was about delivering the Plan, not recovering any additional water. NSW Irrigators' Council never wanted the plan to be delivered and its why they're cranky now.

TO BE CLEAR: 🚨 Yesterdays Water Bill was not about recovering a drop of additional water, simply delivering the 3200GL agreed to in 2012.... The timelines have been extended, and ways to do it broadened but nothing has changed with the quantity.

I’ve spent years advocating for regional Aus - on drought, mental health, life expectancy, connectivity, women in Ag ect. While my views may differ from you on water I’m still one of you. The personal attacks have been pretty disappointing from a few these last weeks… 1/2

Reasonable report. Saves the best till the last paragraph - only way to save the rivers is to buy the water pronto. Not sure why yet another millionaire irrigator gets to run his nonsense unchallenged. Government won't be taking water from anyone. Buying from willing sellers.

I've released the update to our Gas Substitution Roadmap. Fossil gas is no longer the cheap fuel it once was - in just 2 years, the typical gas bill has risen by $500. So, we're helping Victorians slash their energy bills, moving off expensive fossil gas and going all electric.

If you read one good news story this week, let it be this one 👇 Great to see big clean energy projects creating employment + training opportunities for First Nations. When communities are brought along from the beginning, the impact can be HUGE 👏 abc.net.au/news/2023-12-2…

The decision to sack Antoinette Lattouf from her role as an ABC radio presenter over sharing a social media post from a reputable human rights organisation is incredibly disturbing. Read the full statement: meaa.org/mediaroom/abc-… #MEAAmedia

NSW RIGGING THE RESEARCH 🤔🤯 The NSW water minister “not disagreeing” work being done with a predicted outcome. Narrow research being done to only show the negative impacts of buybacks, that a Royal Commission found ‘do not exist or are greatly overstated’. Tanya Plibersek

We're helping households electrify with rebates, discounts and the SEC - because we know it saves you money. But the Federal Government needs to help make it cheaper and easier to do. smh.com.au/politics/feder…

A coalition of unions, welfare, environment and energy organisations are all in Canberra today advocating for the Commonwealth to do just that – it’ll help more households slash their energy bills, and slash our emissions too.
