/1 THREAD: I knew this day would come. While pediatric societies & "hospital organizations" did "science by press release," breathlessly discussing a correlation on a parent survey or releasing a statement about 1 month of admissions in May 2021, I knew we would get REAL DATA.

Let's correct some 🇨🇦CANADIAN🇨🇦 mental health misinformation. A lot of really bad misnfo has been out there. 🚫MISINFO: more Canadians died of suicide due to pandemic/our response🚫 ✅TRUTH: At every age a large drop in the Canadian suicide rate. Overall, 18% lower.✅ /1

Only two sessions in and #SRS22 is rapidly climbing ranks in my informal "best conference" list. What an incredible collection of compassionate and intelligent academics and practitioners. Also, still free to join: suicideresearchsymposium.com

Gatekeeper training starts to wane after 6 months, according to @sasha_zabelski's very thoughtful reply to how crisis volunteer training could be refreshed. I wonder what it's like for mental health professionals who were trained a decade+ ago. #SRS22

In case this busy intro slide doesn't entice you enough, I'll be sharing a picture of me from 10 years ago as part of my #SRS22 presentation. I also promise 2-3 jokes. No more no less. 4:45 EDT (2:45 MST)!

#SRS22 Day 1 was such a delight. It's accessible, thought-provoking, and has some of the best conference discussion/chats. 10/10. No notes.

Also, wild that most co-presenters at our panel found the same effect, in different settings and with different populations: Grad training in suicide risk is not good enough. Amped to do something about this! #SRS22

So proud of my mum for this hugely important study disproving the chemical imbalance theory of depression: hope it can help people struggling with mental health to better understand the problems they are going through as well as the available treatments independent.co.uk/independentpre…

Exactly what we should be pursuing: Approaches to suicide prevention that don’t obsess over prediction! PPVs are poor for *every* top cause of death (heart attack, stroke, drunk driving, auto accidents) yet prevention improves for these fields bc they don’t fixate on prediction.

This is the kind of article that I'm going to cite over and over again, waving it incessantly in my next few workshops. Maybe even bring it up at parties idk #Suicide #SuicidePrevention thelancet.com/journals/lanps…

Very, very, very important thread! Biggest points: 1. Suicidal thoughts aren't always an emergency. 2. We need to look more critically at involuntary hospitalization & its negative effects.

I'm heartbroken. The room where we showcased these theses and dissertations is where I completed most of my masters and PhD education. When I graduated, I got my works bound to match. It was a rite of passage. I, and I'm sure others, would have loved to keep them.
