Alistair Darling was the perfect Chancellor for a crisis. Calm, logical, ordered and decisive. He combined huge integrity with a wonderful dry wit. It was a privilege to work for him and to be his friend. A true public servant and a great Briton.

I’m very sorry to hear about the passing of Alistair Darling. I was his private secretary when he became Chancellor. It was a privilege to serve someone with such integrity, decency and dry sense of humour. My thoughts are with his family.

It’s 5 years since Jeremy passed. In some ways it feels like yesterday yet in others so long ago. It’s a privilege to try and carry on his legacy as Heywood Fellow.
