How Kenny Blakeney balances winning and mentoring -- and the lessons he learned Duke Men’s Basketball -- as head basketball coach at Howard University Howard Men’s Basketball. Terrific piece by Max Rego The Messenger themessenger.com/sports/kenny-b…
Saquon Barkely told me he didn't want to play college football at all early in high school, and didn't start taking it seriously until Rutgers offered him a full scholarship based off his JV highlights. Then he ditched Rutgers for a non-football reason. themessenger.com/sports/saquon-…
Known the great Jen Royle a long time, going back to heyday of New York Yankees/Red Sox '03-04 rivalry. She crushed it in one male-dominated industry & doing same in another. Her @TableBoston eatery is awesome. She dishes (wink) on all for The Messenger Sports: tinyurl.com/mspekdfx
Jen Royle used to be a sports reporter. Now she's an award-winning chef celebrating her fifth anniversary at @TableBoston. How'd she do it? New from Christian Red The Messenger. Jen Royle themessenger.com/sports/jen-roy…
NEW STORY: You've heard of the $2 billion Intuit Dome, the new home of the Clippers next season. Here's the story of Teresa Martinez and her dog, Blue, who live in a small home in the corner of the arena's footprint because the homeowner refuses to sell. themessenger.com/sports/la-clip…
The LA Clippers' new arena looms over the tiny home of a lone elderly woman and her dog. "The construction noise is really bad," says the tenant, who misses her neighbors, and a shady tree. By Arash Markazi and Christian Red The Messenger themessenger.com/sports/la-clip…
For The Messenger Sports, had the pleasure talking with the great former SI photographer Walter Iooss, Jr. (@iooss_io), on early SI days, Swimsuit Issue, Reggie, "The Catch," MJ and what's becoming a lost art. tinyurl.com/bdfwuktt
If you want to know what yesterday was like at The Messenger, read this by HOFFSTACK (Jordan Hoffman’s Substack) New York Magazine. nymag.com/intelligencer/…
Amazing event in Rye, NY tonight. A reunion of Sports Illustrated staffers in honor of the mag’s 70th anniversary. I spent 22 years there and still can’t believe it. Loved that time and those people. So good to see everyone again! And Sports Illustrated continues to do great work.
After the New York Mets won game 6 of the 1986 World Series I was in the interview room at Shea and asked Mookie Wilson “Do you even realize what just happened?” The room erupted. Thus, I ask you. Did that really just happen? My goodness.
So many fond memories of the beer truck in Durham! But I digress ... Check out the bangorblueox.com & Bangor Blue Ox for a serialized documentary about the beloved 1996-97 Northeast League club.
