I was put to school to one Mr Potts in the Cliff at Lewes from whom on 7 Jan 1630 being the day after Epiphany, I went to free-school at Southover, of which one Agnes Morley had been the foundress & now Edward Snatt was the master under whom I remained till sent to University.

Of the birch: plant the small twigs, or suckers having roots, & after the first year, cut them within an inch of the surface; this will cause them to sprout in strong & lusty tufts, fit for copp’ce & spring woods; or by reducing them to one stem render them fit for the turner.

Of the hornbeam: being planted in small fosses or trenches, at half a foot interval, and in the single row, it makes the noblest and the statliest hedges for long walks in gardens

Men seldom plant trees till they begin to be wise, that is, till they grow old, and find by experience the prudence and necessity of it

Of the sweet chestnut: we give that fruit to our swine in England, which is amongst the delicacies of princes in other countries, & of being of the larger nut is a lusty & masculine food for rusticks at all times, & of better nourishment for husbandman than coal, & rusty bacon.

The poles of alder are as useful as those of willows; but the coals far exceed them, especially for gunpowder. Likewise useful for piles, pumps, hop-poles, water pipes, troughs, sluices and trenchers.

Of The Maple: It were a most laudable attempt and try the planting of such sorts as are not indigenes amongst us but an excellent tree: it would prove of extraordinary benefit and ornament to the public and were worthy even of the royal care

Of the ash: is (of all other) the sweetest of our forest-fuelling, & the fittest for ladies chambers, it will burn even whilst it is green.

14 Oct 1691. A most pleasing autumn. Our navy come in without having performed anything, yet there has been great loss of ships by negligence, and unskillful men governing the fleet and Navy board.

19 January 1649 - I returned home, passing an extraordinary danger of being drowned by our wherries falling foul in the night on another vessel then at anchor shooting the bridge at three quarters’ ebb, for which His mercy God almighty be praised.

Of the willow: you may cut withies at any mild and gentle season, between leaf and leaf, even in Winter; but the most congruous time both to plant and to cut them is about the new moon and first open weather of the early spring.

Of the oak: Some advise, that in the planting of oaks 4 or 5 be suffer’d to stand very near to one another, and then to leave the most prosperous but I conceive it were better to plant them at some distances, as they may least incommode one another
