#OnThisDay 1920 Kevin Barry's court-martial began. Barry refused to recognise the court. Barry was charged with the murder of three British soldiers in Dublin. The court-martial found 18 year old Barry guilty & sentenced him to death by hanging. #Ireland #History

20 October 1938 | A Dutch Jewish girl, Barbara Aal, was born in Amsterdam. In October 1944 she was deported to #Auschwitz from #Theresienstadt ghetto with her mother Julia. They were both murdered in a gas chamber.

21 October 1966. A coal heap collapsed onto a school in the village of Aberfan in Wales, killing 144 people: 116 of them were children. The tragedy was one of the worst UK mining disasters, and subsequent inquiries showed it was completely avoidable.

#OnThisDay 1896 Arthur Shields, the famous Hollywood actor, was born in Dublin. A member of the ICA, Shields fought in the Rising & was later interned in Frongoch. He died in 1961 in California but was buried with full military honours in Deans Grange Cemetery. #Ireland #History
