While many remember today the death of my brother & 4 other journalists at Balibo Timor Leste in 1975 by invading Indonesian forces, please spare a thought for the more than 250,000 Timorese who died during their subsequent 24 year bloody occupation.

This is who did the #Balibo murders: ▪️Army Captain Yunus Yosfiah and Christoforus da Silva did the shooting and knifing of the Australian journalists, with accomplices, according to witnesses. ▪️Murdered on the express orders of Indonesian General Benny Murdani, to leave ‘no

I have had the good fortune to be interviewed twice on Late Night Live, by Phillip Adams & Anne Deveson. Each time I expected critique but also knowledge of the subject & fairness, which I received. With David Marr we clearly can’t expect either.

A big loss for the US empire: Ecuador's Trump-backed, right-wing oligarch President Noboa tried to rewrite the country's progressive constitution to allow US military bases in its territory. 61% of Ecuadorians voted against his proposal. They DON'T want foreign military bases.

Whitlam in Timor internationalaffairs.org.au/australianoutl… On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Indonesian invasion of East Timor, it is good to get this article out, in collaboration with Timorese researcher Fernando Ximenes and USC academic Dr Shannon Brincat. Shannon Brincat

Excellent article by Ivo Mateus Goncalves. Understanding the reality of the Indonesian invasion of East Timor for the Timorese people and how it came about is important for Timorese, Indonesians and Australians. johnmenadue.com/post/2025/12/h…

Australia should withdraw the invitation to Herzog, or the govt’s noises about social cohesion and adherence to international law are meaningless

There’s a dirty deal happening this morning between Labor and the Coalition designed to silence support for a free Palestine and to jail their critics.

On 7.30 tonight David Speers asked AG Michell Rowland several times if the term genocide would lead to prosecution under the new laws. She evaded every time. HRW, Amnesty and the ICJ have used the word. The laws will clearly stifle protest & truthful discussion about Palestine.

A reminder this is the guy who will decide which organisations get banned or individuals harassed under the new laws. johnmenadue.com/post/2025/11/a…

Count them — 20 solid punches, dealt out to a young person lying on the ground, head pushed onto the concrete, under the knees and the weight of two police. Unnecessarily violent tactics with no public announcements on methods of crowd dispersal after the rally.

Have to agree. Hitchens was massively over rated, a polemicist far more than an intellectual. The quality of his analysis of international issues was often simplistic and ill-informed.
