Because the FDA never approved thalidomide it was thought that the US escaped this catastrophe, but as Jennifer Vanderbes explains in my podcast, her research has revealed that the drug was prescribed pre-approval in the States by over 1200 doctors, you can hear the full story here:

To kick off 2024 and the fourth #YearofScience Reading Challenge, I will first be reading “Wonder Drug” by Jennifer Vanderbes. The early cases and the subsequent FDA investigations were a topic that Pathophysiology professors had touched on during my senior year at Baylor University.
