R.I.P. Curtis Fuller, the trombone great who played with legends like Bud Powell, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, Yusef Lateef, played a hand in some early Strata-East releases, and recorded many albums with his own bands for Blue Note, Savoy, Impulse! and others.

One of jazz's all-time great trombonists, Curtis Fuller, passed yesterday at 86. As Fred Bouchard noted in this 1997 JT review, J.J. Johnson had the chops "but God gave Curtis Fuller a big chunk of the soul." Look for a full obituary on our website soon. jazztimes.com/archives/curti…

Saddened to hear that the great trombonist, educator & NEA Jazz Master #CurtisFuller has passed away aged 86. In addition to his own stellar Blue Note albums Fuller was an elevating presence on landmarks like John Coltrane "Blue Train" & Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers "Mosaic."
