Still can't believe this. I am one of so, so many who was lucky enough to call Darrel J. McLeod a cherished friend. He was inspired and inspiring and loving and wildly generous and had so many books left to write. Heartbroken for his family and all who loved him. No words. What a void.

Darrel exuded kindness and brilliance, and I feel so fortunate to have spent time with him over the years. He was like an uncle/big brother to so many writers and storytellers, rich with a nurturing and generous spirit. My sincerest condolences to his loved ones ❤️✊🏽

We are devasted to learn of Darrel J. McLeod's passing. His Memoir, “Mamaskatch: A Cree Coming of Age" won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction in 2018. Words cannot express what his loss means for so many people and communities. We will miss him dearly.

It's hard to put Darrel McLeod into words. He mentored others, and brought joy and music with him where ever he went. We are so grateful to have had Darrel with us, and send our love to his family. His ripples will spread far and wide, and we will miss him greatly.
