Hilariously, the subject line of the provost’s email was “Inclusive Teaching.” Seems obvious to me the message was “Don’t wear a Palestine flag if you’re teaching astronomy”, but they can’t actually say that, so instead they’re forced to undermine the entire DEI 2.0 initiative.

Al Young assigned The Philadelphia Negro in his Social Organization of Black America course I took as an undergrad, and he was super clear on this point--so much so that I still remember it, many years later. I mean, compare that book to anything in AJS for the next 40 years!

Are you an assistant prof studying inequality & looking for a 2nd semester of sabbatical support? I hope you'll apply to spend AY25-26 Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics. As a work-family scholar, I am delighted that successful applicants can choose a nonresidential option if that's best for them.

In their 2019 paper, Chetty et al find a gap in economic mobility between Black and White males. In our paper, Rourke OBrien & I show that municipal police is a key explanation for why we observe a racial mobility gap for males (but not females). OA Roger McIntyre: doi.org/10.1016/j.rssm…

In our new study PLOS ONE, we found that the police shooting of Jacob Blake reduced Black Chicago residents’ trust in police. The article is open access, so give it a read! journals.plos.org/plosone/articl…

The past few years I've been developing a new research agenda exploring how the built environment -- the architecture of urban space -- shapes grassroots politics in urban Africa. Really excited to share part of this work AJPS: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11… 1/5
