People who spend their careers writing NIH grants are the literal opposite of grifters. It is a soul-sucking, brutal process. The scientists don’t get rich when they get funded. Their salary doesn’t change. They do it for science. For patients. You know, to make 🇺🇸healthy.

The rift between scientists and the public is only getting larger. A few years ago we started an initiative called “Supper with a Scientist” to allow in a very informal setting - and over food - to bridge this gap. Maybe it’s time we bring something like this back.

Aerosols are not magic, they are defeated by ventilation, filtration and masking. Clean indoor air isn’t just about reducing Covid transmission, it also reduces the transmission of all other airborne illnesses, including measles.

Seasonal flu, bird flu, covid, measles and more are running rampant, so this is your reminder that face masks do work to prevent respiratory infections. But only if you wear them.

The truth is that the scientific process is horribly inefficient and wasteful. But the solution is NOT cutting funds and it’s NOT top down guidance of what should be studied. Instead, we should revolutionize how we publish and improve peer review.

Gothamist Governor Kathy Hochul please don’t do this. Most people wearing masks do so to protect their health. COVID-19, influenza, and so many more illnesses, are still circulating, and pose myriad health risks to everyone, and especially immunocompromised individuals. (continued)

Gothamist Governor Kathy Hochul Governor Kathy Hochul if you are concerned about crime & antisemitism—which are real and horrible occurrences—you could enact a law in which individuals cannot cover BOTH their eyes and nose/mouth simultaneously. Studies have shown that eyes are reliable readouts of identity.

Gothamist Governor Kathy Hochul Governor Kathy Hochul I understand this is a tough situation. The cowards perpetrating antisemitic harassment &other crimes are coopting a public health tool as a mechanism of concealing identity. But mask bans hurt so many people, even if there are health exceptions in place. (Cont’d)

Jenna Newman, Ph.D. (@jennanewmanphd) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Gothamist Governor Kathy Hochul There is prejudice against those who wear masks for health reasons. It isn’t universal, but if mask bans become law, mask-wearers will ultimately be given a hard time in some situations, and potentially be asked, unlawfully, to remove their masks. (continued)

Gothamist Governor Kathy Hochul This compounds the immense damage already wrought in this anti-scientific era. This endangers the health of all New Yorkers, and notably, of the innumerable Jewish New Yorkers who mask to protect their health. (Continued)

Gothamist Governor Kathy Hochul Governor Kathy Hochul Please please please consider a solution in which a certain % of one’s face, including the eyes, must be showing, in certain public settings. Nuance matters. Thank you for listening.

Thank you Bhardwaj Lab for a fantastic 5 years of scientific learning and growth! I’ve been enjoying staying in touch with everyone and am excited to carry all that I’ve learned to my new position AstraZeneca !

PSA Neck gaiters are not masks. Neck gaiters are not effective at stopping the spread of airborne viruses. Masks, especially well-fitting ones are effective at preventing infection. Conflating the two is bad because it can encourage politicians to ban masks for the general public

🦠 New nature study finds that respiratory viruses like flu and SARS‑CoV‑2 can wake up dormant breast cancer cells in the lungs, triggering metastatic growth within days. This IL‑6‑driven inflammation also correlated with higher metastasis and mortality risk in cancer survivors.

Would like to note that many of us who are virologists, microbiologists m, immunologists and ID specialists have had this fear since the beginning of just given the nature of corona viruses Personally, imo there is enough evidence to state it is. Why do I believe that?
