Subcortical band heterotopia are often called 'double cortex', and indeed they are, as their neurons have conserved identities, input & output connectivity, and can even functionally replace those of the cortex! This is what we show in this collaborative work led by Sergi Roig Puiggros

Cortical development imposes mechanical constraints that may lead to lesions. This study shows that without microglia these lesions would persist after birth, highlighting a novel crucial role for microglia. Lovely! (with Aurélien's contribution focused on cortical heterotopia)
