It’s amazing how thoroughly we’ve erased this crucial part of Luca Guadagnino’s filmography. It opened doors for him. It’s still his biggest critical and commercial success. It isn’t even 7 years old.

Re the upcoming Beach Boys documentary, here’s audio of Murry Wilson—the father of Brian, Dennis and Carl—browbeating the group as they worked on “Help Me Rhonda.” He was their manager and deemed himself more talented than his sons. They fired him in 1965. faroutmagazine.co.uk/murry-wilson-a…

It IS unwatchable. Carol Baum said this after we screened “Dead Ringers” at the Jacob Burns Film Center and she mentioned having seen “Anyone But You” on a plane. But “Dead Ringers,”
b/o a book Baum optioned 10 years before David Cronenberg adapted it, gets better and better.

Sorry for not thinking Flashdance was a film about female empowerment 41 years ago. I didn’t like the way Beals’ character was treated. Adrian Lyne was known only for “Foxes” and commercials when it opened.

Any new book by James Kaplan is cause for celebration. This one’s about the making of the jazz classic “Kind of Blue.” It involves Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans—and it’s extremely accessible whether you’re a jazz fan or not. Come celebrate with us. Thursday at 7.
