The problem with our planning process is that it drives us to build homes where it's easiest, not where they are most needed by workers. Interesting research (with an interactive map!)

NEW: Councils are set to lose the power to block housing developments for projects with more than 150 new homes. If a council wishes to stop a large housing project, it will now have to refer the decision to the government.

NEW: The Government has just announced new national policy giving a default ‘yes’ new homes within walking distance of train stations that give people good access to decent jobs! Here’s one potential example:

How can we build more homes in well-connected places near good jobs and amenities? Steve Reed & Matthew Pennycook MP just announced a default ‘yes’ for homes to be built in the train belt🚆 This could be a GREAT way to build the homes we need

Want to build homes to grow the economy? This is the policy. And they’re doing it! Place workers within easy commutes of the best opportunities and they are your growth lever.

Great to see today's news that air-to-air heat pumps will be included in the Boiler Upgrade Scheme! The scheme will offer a £2,500 discount for air-to-air heat pump installations - giving consumers a cheaper way to decarbonise their homes x.com/watt_direction…

New: Labour is taking up our Centre for British Progress proposal to include air-to-air heatpumps (which can cool as well as heat) within its boiler upgrade scheme. A huge win for electrification, the climate + keeping cool! Credit to Sam Dumitriu Britain Remade for first raising this.

Not all pro-homes policy reforms involve the big house builders — in fact much of the data points in the opposite direction.

California is a good case study of a small policy, delivered by ordinary people, now accounting for 1 in 5 new homes. Read YIMBY Alliance’s blog on residential annexes (granny flats) yimbyalliance.org/2025/08/20/res…

The triple lock has been vital to protecting pensioner incomes and lifting people out of poverty. But with pressure on Government finances mounting, how can we reform the triple lock to make it more sustainable? In today’s @britishprogress paper, we propose a long-term solution:

More on this: A government-owned housebuilder, Platform4, is set to turn disused brownfield land into 40,000 well-connected homes around railway stations... 🤔But what could these transport-led homes look like? 🧵📷 Take a look at these images of the first four sites...

Excited about this plan for Railway Station homes next to Manchester Piccadilly Station. Huge opportunity to boost the area around Piccadilly + build more well-connected homes 🚆🏡

Plans have been submitted to Kingston and Merton councils to turn the former gasworks at Motspur Park into 5 apartment blocks. The towers would be between 8 and 16 storeys tall and offer 586 new homes, 174 of which would be affordable. What do you think?
