I liked this sketch that Konrad Zuse made of himself at his desk because it means my posture at work isn’t as bad as it could be.

I learned a lot of new German words this trip, including “selbstversenkung.” The Deutsches Technikmuseum has this exhibition featuring small models of the Hochseeflotte capital ships, all displayed sitting on the sea floor because they were scuttled at Scapa Flow.

Current Status: Thinking of writing a paper to request that we allow the legacy spelling of “main” in C++.

I fly home today. Thank you to everyone who has made my trip to Germany—my 20th across the big pond—wonderful. Nine cities, thirteen operas, six concerts, one ballet, more schnitzels and pretzels and beers than I can count, and, of course, one wonderful C++ conference.

Some years ago I tried listening to Einstein on the Beach and found it so tedious I avoided all of Glass’s operas. I recently listened to Akhnaten for the first time and realized I’d made a terrible mistake. It’s absolutely sublime, from beginning to end.
