3.1 I used to hyper-focus on every student’s individual needs based on a few assessments. But in doing so, I watered down my teaching. Embracing cognitive similarity in group instruction can actually lead to clearer, more effective learning for all.

It’s tempting to “round up” when it comes to the accuracy of answers. A student responds incorrectly and the feedback is, “well, that’s one way to do it.” It seems empathetic, but you end up embedding misconceptions, and the rest of the class benefits from individual corrections.

Carl Hendrick Dylan Wiliam Daniel Willingham The latter is helpful for teachers, as novice students often work with surface knowledge that’s weakly connected, prone to misconceptions, & ripe for forgetting. It reminds us a well sequenced curriculum may better organise what is taught but is no guarantee of what is learned!

ICYMI: When people think about instruction that meets the diverse needs of students, they don’t often think about whole-class instruction and textbooks. And yet, they are a key part of our strategy and the data indicates we are doing differentiation better than any other school.
