Our current economic model treats disease as an ‘exogenous shock’ - but it’s baked in to how it functions.

Our food system (currently) needs deforestation > in turn makes disease more likely > which hits GDP > which creates demand for more growth > etc

Working with local residents on their design and maintenance, Antwerp is piloting tuinstraten (“garden streets”) in five districts across the city.

They improve resiliency (to flooding and heat), liveability and sociability—making these spaces calmer, greener and more beautiful.

Some new research we’ve been working on Dark Matter Labs with CIVIC SQUARE on the real climate risks UK neighbourhoods face and why transformation we may need.

Happy to have this out there and hoping it helps move things forward.

What’s so shocking here is that whilst climate scientists have warned of more extreme weather events, the lack of preparation and mitigation is so apparent.

The end zone of 13yrs of austerity Britain. Simply very sad to live through.

One thing I remain hopeful for is glaring juxtapositions like this lay the ground for just how much we need to change our economy.

Inequality is exponential through generations - but so is reversing this trend.

Tackling this (and it’s cross over with climate adaptation) should be the biggest thing gov and civil society should focus on.

Climate change.

The world’s biggest exporter of olive oil, Spain, has halved its production due to drought and extreme heat, increasing its price (at origin!) 112% since 2022.

It’s happening to other food crops too. Olive oil today, everything else soon.

Our current economic systems often overlook the wellbeing of our planet and its inhabitants. We know this to be true. There's a global network of passionate individuals working to address it, but challenges persist.

This work by others at the LSE. Since while they've found that spatial inequality of wages in the UK has been falling, spatial inequality of household income in the UK has been rising --- and the difference is probably capital gains and self-employment. x.com/ndrlee/status/…

Reminder – we can not invent our way out of climate breakdown.

Any efficiency gains in an economy measured by how much we matter and material we consume (GDP) will always be matched by new inventive ways to consume things.

“In Finland, the # of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.” scoop.me/housing-first-…

Context for today's £28bn kerfuffle:

The UK spent a staggering £265bn on energy in 2022 – the most recent data available – including more than £100bn on imported oil and gas alone

Insulating homes + expanding domestic green energy supplies wld bring those numbers down…

Climate transition should be an equal right to all.

Right now it is accelerating the UK's structural inequalities.
