For all you weather bugs, Grace Leuchtenberger & I wrote up 17 years of data from the Friday Harbor Labs weather station. Shout out to Brian Helmuth for shipping me a spare tower back in 2005! Read more here: tinyurl.com/4bfrz9kc Carrington Lab UW Biology

New paper in Functional Ecology: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/13… Really proud of this one, co-authored with three amazing undergraduate students School of Biological Sciences😁 We show that the effects of heatwaves on fitness are very sensitive to timing. Worth a read especially if you do heatwave experiments! 🌡️

Yesterday's North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomaly is Code UFB! A record 1.50°C (4.45σ) above the 1991-2020 mean, the most over average of any day measured this year. And the running joke is getting old, but yes, I will probably have to extend the y-axis again tomorrow.

Our favorite planet has now seen 20 days in a row breaking the modern-day record high-temperature of 16.924°C (62.46°F) set on July 24, 2022. This global heatwave is likely the hottest 20-day stretch in the last 100,000+ years.

An extraordinary marine heatwave has developed off the east coast of Canada, with hundreds of thousands of square miles of ocean experiencing sea surface temperatures more than 5°C (9°F) above normal and max anomalies approaching 10°C (18°F) above normal. Thermal stress from

Another surprise visitor to the San Juan islands today! A giant oarfish washed up on Friday Harbor in near perfect condition. Check out those jaws!!

Glad seeing this out in Functional Ecology, excellently led by Amanda Pettersen. How do fluctuating temperatures alter the amount of energy required to complete development? Another study made possible by our friends Sable Systems International 🐭🐀🧝🏼‍♀️ Sable Systems Europe. Details👇#openaccess Lund University @Biology_LU

Hey #WSN2023 come through the intertidal ecology session at noon today! You'll hear about some thermal physiology (misaligned TPCs!), predictions of fitness outcomes, and baby slugs.

New in Ecology Letters w/ @JennSunday and Mary O'Connor! We find that temperature-dependence of competitive ability (R*) is cold-shifted relative to population growth rates ✨competitive success is highest at temperatures that are sub-optimal for growth✨ doi.org/10.1111/ele.14…
