'The Olympic athlete Charmus was so bad he came seventh in a race of six runners. How, you may ask. Well, a friend of his ran beside him the whole way shouting 'Come on, Charmus!' and beat him over the line. I suppose Charmus was lucky he didn't have more friends.' - Nicharchus

Died (alas!) on this day in 1533, Lucas van Leyden. In 1521 he went to Antwerp to meet the great Albrecht Durer, who was visiting that city, and Durer made this silverpoint drawing of him. Record of a great encounter.

This papyrus signed by Cleopatra grants tax exemption from sales of imported wine to the Roman businessman Publius Canidius, a friend of Mark Antony. At the bottom, in a rare example of her handwriting, Cleopatra herself added the Greek word "ginesthoi," "make it happen."

My advice, for what it’s worth: try not to be distracted by the faintly discourteous, the mildly incompetent, the harmlessly obnoxious. Roll with the delayed trains, dropped litter and misused apostrophes. Save your powder for the truly malevolent creatures now stalking the land.
