Japanese Giant Salamander and the Genbaku Dome, now Hiroshima Peace Memorial, last building standing after the "Little Boy" atomic bomb attack by the US in 1945. These animals live over 70 years, so this individual *could* have been alive then. 📷 Robin Franzmann

Since 2015 we have been studying Canada's only population of Small-mouthed #salamanders and the other salamanders they live alongside. This was the first time since 2019 that we were able to return during the breeding season to collect more data (due to COVID restrictions).

Well no changing it now! For anyone interested, I will be giving my M.S. thesis defense “Gradients in success: Impact of Wave Energy, Predation and Elevation on Oyster Reef Restoration” on May 26 at 9am. It will be hybrid format so anyone is welcome to join!

Does anyone have training recommendations for Adobe Illustrator geared toward scientists? I've dabbled but am hoping to learn more!

academic conferences are wild. $1000 in flights and lodging. talk about your work for 15mins. hear some questions that are more of comments. go to the plenary. a senior scholar says something completely out of pocket. "this is not who we are." overpriced cocktails at hotel bar.

It's never been feasible to be an academic without the social and economic support of a partner. to be honest. It is a system made for people (men) who can either offload childcare onto a partner completely OR a person who doesn't need the academic paycheck to be liveable

stoked to share the preprint for one my dissertation chapters! we use participatory science data across 6 major taxonomic clades to show that across California, historical redlining alters species richness as well as species assemblages!! thread 👇🏽 bit.ly/46OWHRy

It’s basically the trolley problem. Either we inflict this marginal annoyance upon you or we have STEM majors uncritically designing new child-killing, blender missiles.

This whole thread. If you’re grading students on how well they write papers, but don’t teach your students how to write papers, you’re just perpetuating inequalities.

Appalachian salamanders are beautiful! We show #salamanders pick up the bacteria on their skin from the environment in a species-specific way & this salamander-bacteria #phylosymbiosis relationship explains, in part, how susceptible they are to a pathogen academic.oup.com/ismej/advance-…
