Happy to share another important work: Looking for a potential upper limit of mineral-associated in thoroughly selected German agricultural with up to 12% SOC, we Thünen-Institut couldn't find any. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

A long standing paradigm in ecology is that increasing diversity leads to increased stability. Our newest paper shows that this might not always be true in agricultural systems, depending on the scale and the metric by which we evaluate. (🧵)

Our article from our Soil Security Team Soil Ecology Lab UoM pulse labelling experiment on intensive/extensive grassland in response to drought accepted in Nature Communications 🥳 This one has been a long while coming with 4 years of work but so happy of the result!

Adoption of no-till cultivation alone is good for but does not sequester carbon. In this new paper in Geoderma - the global #OA journal of soil science, Andong Cai compiled 1061 paired comparisons from 144 studies. (1/5)

Considering how soil C is associated with minerals? Check out this amazing global analysis by Katerina Georgiou and co-authors for estimates of global stocks, driving factors behind the associations, and its ability to explain C accumulation. Wow!

Are you interested in soil organic matter fractionation methods, but you're not sure where to start? Well, do I have a book chapter for you!

This was really a cool project to work on, great to have had a chance to contribute to such a quality resource!

Curious as to which of these statements people agree with more, recognizing they’re not mutually exclusive. To build soil C for climate mitigation it is most important to: (a) increase protected C; (b) ensure positive mass balance of soil C regardless of mean residence time.

Congrats to Emily Oldfield and our Soil C team on this Science Policy piece laying out clear reasoning for using a jurisdictional approach to soil C crediting. I’m feeling so lucky to have recently joined this awesome team!

Today's Micrograph: Acidotolerant bacteria amongst iron oxide minerals (possibly goethite or jarosite). The sample was collected by Muammar Mansor from the Rio Tinto region.
Fun times in the Tuebingen Geomicrobiology lab.

Does 'carbon farming' have a penalty in terms of increased nitrogen emissions to the air and water? We analyze this question systematically and find that on average, soil carbon enhancements result in lower nitrogen losses, including N2O emissions nyaspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…
