Since leaving Montpellier in 2017, Duhan van der Merwe has only been a substitute three times (excluding Lions tours). Twice for Edinburgh, and once for Scotland on his Six Nations debut in 2020. He's made 49 starts from 50 caps. Fascinating to see how he responds on Sunday.

One of the most bizarre games I've called. But one Rassie and his Boks will take so much from. No team thrives more in adversity. They seem to truly relish the hardship. Rotation, disruption, cards, baying crowd and strong opposition. It doesn't matter. Still they execute.

The Scotland camp don't like it when their mentality is questioned, but those questions are only growing tougher. From coasting at 21-0 to haemhorraging line breaks, penalties and momentum with little hint of changing the flow. A grim November.

Such admiration for how Argentina have built a resilient squad and a hugely entertaining brand. Victims of geography when covid struck, their Jaguares dumped out of Super Rugby and players scattered across Europe. The whole squad is home-grown. Seriously impressive.

In 34 outstanding minutes on the pitch yesterday, Santiago Carreras got his hands on the ball 22 times, contributed nine carries for 97m and assisted three line breaks. Just like Damian McKenzie a week earlier, Argentina's bench brought verve and impact while Scotland waned.

Spotted at Murrayfield yesterday. The great Ben Tameifuna and his pals taking in the match. Stadium seat design clearly didn't account for 150kg Tongans. The 'Ikale Tahi with absolutely nothing to lose on Sunday.

Edo Todaro left Milan at 14 to board at Ipswich School. He's played six pro games yet made such a dynamite impression at Northampton Saints 😇 and PREM Rugby that he's on the cusp of an Italian cap. He'll be the youngest Italrugby debutant since a certain Parisse rugbypass.com/plus/edoardo-t…

Quality stat uncovered during prep for Sunday, alongside Jon Newcombe: Sitaleki Timani becomes Tonga's oldest player and the fourth oldest man to debut for an international team at 39yo. Men's rugby's oldest Test debutant was 49yo Rob Adams for Norway earlier this year.

Edinburgh's Boan Venter with an absolutely top-class ruck clean a phase before squeezing over. Try scrubbed out for the earlier forward pass but super stuff from the prop.

This is like watching a python slowly constricting a rodent. Thought Matt Carley might have to put a fourth Irishman off for the penalty try offence too.

A maddening November for Scotland. Outstanding in patches; bereft in others. Those infuriating fluctuations in performance, and the uncomfortable questions which dog this team and its coach, show no signs of disappearing. Thanks for your company this month on Rugby on TNT Sports.
