Our newest work on intracellular vesicle transport by molecular motors tug-of-war is online! Led by Youngmin Park, we developed a coarse-grained model that efficiently captures the stochastic transitions between motion in opposite directions. arxiv.org/abs/2107.07597

A new format alongside our usual symposia: sampling the tremendous range of young talent in our field. Thanks to all who suggested speakers, and apologies to those we couldn't fit in. Hoping to do it again soon, and then regularly.

Is nuclear size a spandrel set by physics rather than biological constraints? Beautiful experiments by Joël and the Chang lab point to the answer. This has been a labor of love and a great example of how what you learn in one context can be surprisingly useful in others, too.

Genetic networks squeeze lots of information out of small numbers of molecules. Could part of the trick be that the enhancers which "read" transcription factor concentrations have an architecture that solves an optimization problem? pnas.org/content/118/46… 1/3

When bending a straw, a famous instability occurs, studied by Brazier a century ago. We found that bacteria would similarly buckle at tiny torques were it not for their huge internal pressure. See: physics.aps.org/articles/v15/s… for a popular summary and link to the paper Luyi Qiu

Intrigued to learn about this work from Alan Garfinkel rebooting math education for life sciences, basing it on bio-relevant dynamical systems. Seems like such an engaging and effective way to do it: link.springer.com/article/10.100…
