I found this from the IMF pretty shocking:

Europe and Canada have basically offset the *entire* post-2008 reduction in overall labor force participation from aging by increasing female labor force participation.

Clearly something for us to learn from.

The 3.7% core PCE beat is likely due to revised seasonal factors that boosted some of the PPI items in Jan/Feb (and maybe Mar). Think airfares and imputed financial serv. Mar may be higher due to imputed financial serv. Consensus of 0.30% more likely will straddle 0.3%/0.4%.

In a statement to Semafor, a New York Times spokesperson pushes back on this, saying 'the notion that any line of coverage has been ordered up or encouraged in retaliation for declining an interview, or any other reason, is outrageous and untrue.'

Bottom line: this release confirms that the real side of the economy remains very healthy but the nominal side is too hot. Overall that is not a bad place to be—but not a place where the Fed will need to cut rates anytime soon.

This is a silly frame. No, random southern schools are not poaching Ivy material. But the reality is probably more interesting--that coastal kids who might have previously looked at lesser LACs are increasingly apt to to look southward for a more traditional college experience.

New paper from Norway: Banning smartphones in school

- significantly decreased doctors visits for psychological symptoms and diseases among girls
- reduced bullying among both genders
- improved girls’ GPA and attendance rates
- largest effect sizes were among the poorest kids

I don’t fly much, but I’m pretty sure I’d vote for whichever candidate promises to get rid of the new TSA photo process, which slows the security line to a crawl.

On Columbia president having students arrested: we are back to the previous situation with the encampment, and it seems very unlikely that anyone will get arrested again unless things escalate beyond that. So, no matter your preferences, that decision was a costly mistake.
