Memphis Tennessee Garrison (1890-1988), a remarkable Black labor leader from Huntington, WV. The daughter of former slaves, she worked as a coal camp teacher before becoming one of the first female UMWA organizers. She fought tirelessly for both workers' rights and civil rights.

The railroad industry was vital to West Virginia's Black community in the early 20th century. African Americans held various roles from porters to brakemen on the C&O Railway. The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters was the first Black-led labor union chartered by the AFL.

African American workers played a vital role in Charles Town's orchard industry from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s. Many families worked seasonally in the apple and peach orchards, developing specialized skills in fruit cultivation and harvest.
