The highlighted island is Sakhalin. After the 1905 Russo-Japanese War, it was split at the 50th parallel between them. In 1945 at the end of WWII, the Soviets invaded and annexed Japan's southern half. The Soviets then expelled most of the Japanese and Koreans living there.
