I think I’ve asked this question before: How is it that judges for fiction in translation consistently select compelling titles but judges for USA fiction consistently do not?

Can Xue’s stories terrify me. She writes a terror of incomprehension that is the same terror I watched my grandfather face through Alzheimer’s during my childhood. I love her work but it takes a lot out of me to read it.

It was wonderful to see the presentations on Renee Gladman's writing at this symposium hosted by Porter Square Books. The presentations were creative, innovative, bold - everything that I would expect from readers who love Gladman's work. Writing should inspire creativity.

Some nice people invited me to their MFA to give a talk and they did not rescind their invitation even after I told them how I felt about some of their instructors. 🙈

Independent publishing: exists. The novels: innovative, challenging, many in translation. MFA: I don't have one. Book reviews: like all criticism, an opportunity to think more rigorously about a better world. I know, radical.

Such a fun book about writing.
