Barley and other small grain inspections underway! A 1922 survey found no effort to plant uniform seed (20 different varieties in one field). Standardization, seed certification, dramatically improved the wheat and small grain industries in Illinois. Thank you field inspectors!

It’s been decades since we have had a phenol test request. Phenols are oxidized by enzymes present in the pericarp, aleurone and other seed structures. The amount phenol oxidase present is a heritable trait still used in some breeder descriptions.

Cusco corn - named for the capital of the Incas - is one of the specialty corns the Identity Preserved Grain Lab has seen over the years. Large, floury and soft they are the starting point for toasted corn snacks.

Sulfentrazone screening this week! Some lines are more tolerant than others. We continue to see requests for alternative chemistries from plant breeders and seed companies. #greenhouse #traittesting #illinoiscrop
