Show your stripes: these ones show ocean acidification. Many people don’t know that this is more than enough reason to phase out fossil fuels fast, even if CO2 didn’t cause global warming (which of course it does). Other ocean basins here: oceanacidificationstripes.info/s/ph/basin/glo…

I'm in Tonga to issue a global SOS – Save Our Seas. Global average sea levels are rising at rates unprecedented in the past 3,000 years. The ocean is overflowing because of climate change. The world must #ActNow & answer the SOS before it's too late. un.org/climatechange/…

A new UN report out today and launched by António Guterres #ClimateAction in Tonga at the Pacific Island Forum highlights the extreme risks of level rise in the Pacific which can only be contained by limiting global warming to 1.5°, the Paris Agreement limit.

Rising seas will cause more frequent coastal flooding For some Pacific states, floods will go from <5 days a yr in 1980-2010s, to once a fortnight on average by 2050, and every 2-3 DAYS(!) in worst case! Info in new report by AntĂłnio Guterres #Climate Team is truly terrifying

"Big polluters have a clear responsibility to cut emissions or risk catastrophe in the Pacific, the most vulnerable area of the world" warns António Guterres The region is threatened by accelerating sea level rise, a warming ocean and ocean acidification bbc.com/news/articles/…

Sea-level rise is no longer a distant threat, especially for the Pacific’s small island developing states! Seas are rising at rates unprecedented in at least the last 3,000 years as a result of human caused warming, and rate is accelerating ⬆️🌊 = 0.48 cm/year between 2014–2023

A few days in Tonga offered me a front row seat to how people here have to endure the impacts of the climate crisis on a regular basis: From torrential rains & flash floods to rising sea levels forcing families to relocate. The world must take urgent #ClimateAction now.

From pole to pole and everywhere in between, Earth's ice is disappearing. #StateoftheClimate2023 The Arctic was warm and navigable in 2023. All reference glaciers lost mass in 2023. Antarctica sea ice set record lows throughout 2023. More highlights: climate.gov/sotc2023

During my visit to Tonga, I heard directly from civil society and local communities how climate change and sea level rise are upending their lives. I urge Pacific countries to continue raising their voices for #ClimateAction. If we save the Pacific, we save the world.
