Ka Pai a chairde. A night for the ages as we launched Hemi Kelly’s te reo Māori version of Brian Friel’s Translations at Auckland Writers Festival. Blessed to be joined by Vincent O’Sullivan who wrote a poem for the publication as Seamus Heaney did in 1980.

So, so humbled and honoured to represent Ireland tonight by joining Marco Sonzogni Hemi Kelly Rawinia Higgins to reflect on the journey in translating Friel’s masterpiece, what it means for Irish & Māori & where we go from here. What a pinch me moment!!

More Irish nationals returning to live in Ireland than emigrating, according to latest CSO figures. Over the past half decade about 30,000 people coming and going each year. Nothing like the exodus some claim...because other places also have problems like high housing costs.
