Today 2 suspected B.1.1.529 (Nu variant) samples were analyzed. Samples were flagged as suspicious because of an S gene dropout qPCR. 1 sample was confirmed to be the new Nu variant. This patient was not vaccinated and developed mild symptoms 11 days after returning from Egypt.

New work from our lab on SARS-CoV-2 in Nature Communications. Here, we show that virus can disseminate out of lungs to blood and extrapulmonary organs in severe COVID-19. This includes an immunocompromised host with ongoing in vivo evolution of SARS-CoV-2 (1/3) rdcu.be/cB9M9

We report organ-specific SARS-CoV-2 intra-host genome diversity including emerging mutations found in VOCs (shown in red). However, this patient died in June 2020 before any reported cases of these VOC. This supports the idea that intra-host evolution could lead to new VOCs (2/3)
