Chosen from our Shining Lights scheme, our winners of the Chief Executive’s Award at #GSA24 went the extra mile to put a smile on a patient’s face on their birthday.

Ellie Laughton, Staff Nurse and Gillian Downs, Nursing Assistant from Hull Outpatients knew their patient was recently widowed with no close family or friends and they had tried to offer a range of support services before which he declined.

They surprised him with a birthday card, a balloon and a cream cake which they presented to him on arrival at the Phlebotomy clinic. Not only did it make his day, but it opened up a discussion about his loneliness.

Later that day, Ellie stayed late at work to call the patient to offer a referral for social prescribing which, having gained his trust, he accepted. This act of kindness exemplifies some of the amazing staff we have working in our organisation. Congratulations Ellie and Gill!

Our hospitals would be lost without our army of volunteers, and in recent years we’ve seen our numbers swell, helping some to pass their time meaningfully and others to gain invaluable experience for an exciting healthcare career ahead.

A BIG thank you to the Rocky Rebels who are part of Lifestyle For their incredible work over the summer, raising an incredible £552 to enhance Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust #WoodlandWard, bringing a smile to the faces of the area’s sickest children.
