This latest research from Oceana UK shows the scale of damage happening now in our Marine Protected Areas 🌊 A ban on bottom trawling and dredging in all our marine protected areas is essential to restore and protect the UK’s marine ecosystems and safeguard coastal communities.

It’s completely incomprehensible that one of the most destructive ways of fishing is permitted in Marine Protected Areas. What exactly are these areas protected from? Please contact Steve Reed MP to urge action on this crucial issue to protect & restore our seas. Oceana UK

As an environmentalist/Nature lover, there's lots of destructive things humans do to our precious ecosphere that I loathe. Possibly the absolute worst is #BottomTrawling in 'Protected' places. The next worst is doing it anywhere. We know so little of our #Ocean and yet destroy it

❌Promise made. Promise broken? Environment Secretary Steve Reed MP vowed to end bottom trawling. A year on, we're STILL waiting. 🛑 20,000+ HRS of suspected bottom trawling happened in “protected” areas last year⁉️ 📩 Hold govt to account. DEMAND A BAN: act.for-the-ocean.org/act/protect-uk…

💫EU Court has confirmed that MPAs must be safeguarded from harmful fishing practices, like bottom trawling. Otherwise, what's the point of calling them 'protected'? Laws to safeguard the ocean exist. Now we need to enforce them. #EUOceanPact can make that happen.

❌"As the iron teeth of the dredger bit into the sea floor & the weighted nets bore down on the ocean [...] there was an audible reaction from the audience [...] the brutality of bottom-trawl fishing had hit home." Our director Hugo Tagholm in The National 🔽 thenational.scot/politics/25182…

🎉 HUGE NEWS: The EU Court has confirmed marine protected areas must be PROPERLY protected from bottom trawling! Countries must act to fulfil their legal duty to safeguard these areas from destruction. This is an absolute WIN for our ocean. 🙌 1/2 clientearth.org/latest/press-o…

A new report from @oceanauk has revealed that the UK’s offshore marine protected areas (MPAs) suffered over 20,000 hours of suspected bottom-trawl fishing last year. 🇬🇧 The scale of tracks across the seabed is enough to circle the UK eight times. 🎣❌ oceanographicmagazine.com/news/suspected…

“In this victory, the court rejected a legal challenge from industrial fishing interests seeking to destroy crucial conservation measures in European MPAs [...] Bottom trawling has no place in any marine protected area.” Our campaign lead, Amy Hammond. 🙌 oceanographicmagazine.com/news/eu-court-…

Sea bass sold in UK supermarkets is fuelling food insecurity in Senegal! Senegal’s seas are being overfished to make fishmeal for farmed sea bass, which is then sold as "sustainable". We must end #overfishing — in the UK & everywhere. 🌍🐟 theguardian.com/environment/20…

A Bloom investigation reveals that 5 Dutch companies dominate Europe’s fishing industry via a network of 400 subsidiaries. They control nearly 230 vessels with a combined capacity = 260,000 tonnes. A sixth of the entire EU fishing fleet’s gross tonnage. euronews.com/green/2025/05/…
