The 3 y.o. who was puking up until recently is handing me tiny, ripped off pieces of his half-eaten toast and after each one says, “Am I a good friend?” or “Am I a nice person?” or “Were you starving?” and then stares at me, waiting for me to eat, and oh wow this mix of emotions.

After 3 yrs of scrambling around to get anywhere, always late and always talking about how we’ll be late, or how we’re trying not to be late, or please just get in the car because today we really, really, shouldn't be late, one of the twins looks at me and asks, “what’s ‘late’?”

I’ve been sitting with this for a while now, and now that it’s time to let the cat out of the bag, I can’t figure out what to say or how to say it. classic. my first book is coming out next year. enormous thanks to @splitlippress for making one of my lifelong dreams come true.

June 22 was the 50th anniversary of the death of Darius Milhaud, a wonderful French composer, and the person I feel most guilty about leaving out of my book The Vexations. Decades later, Milhaud's music still sounds inventive, fresh, and often joyful. Please give it a listen.
