Introducing a crazy new look for Spicomellus, based on newly described osteoderms unlike anything we've ever seen before. I was brought in to produce a life reconstruction based on the new material, published today by Maidment et al. in Nature: nature.com/articles/s4158…

Croc fans are eating good today, we just got a new and exceptionally well preserved robust peirosaurid from Patagonia: Kostensuchus atrox We have most of the skeleton, which suggests a total length of perhaps up to 3.5 meters

After just 4 months of focused work by Perot Museum preparators and volunteers, most of the rock is gone on side 1 of the new plesiosaur from Celina, Texas. Time to slow it down for some fine and delicate detailing on this side of the skeleton. #FossilFriday

Just a reminder not to conflate paleontologists with paleo enthusiasts. It’s generally not paleontologists that make a huge deal about highly fragmentary or undescribed fossils. It’s their job to work on them, whether or not a big deal is made usually comes down to “fans”

Our new paper on Coelacanths from the British Rhaetian. Many of these fossils are identified for the first time from museum collections, many of which had been misidentified as fossils of marine reptiles or other taxa for as long as 150 years. The paper: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

I just heard paleontologist Dr. Hans Sues passed away suddenly! What an incredible loss. I never got to meet him in person but my online interactions were always pleasant. A giant in the field. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues.

Whilst galloping is often attributed to the Cuban crocodiles, the freshwater crocodile (Crocodylus johnstoni) is also known to gallop! In fact, it is the freshwater crocodile that is perhaps the fastest crocodilian on land! Using their speed to evade potential threats.
