William Trotter graduated Harvard magna cum laude in 1895. He founded the Boston Guardian, the Boston Historical & Literary Association, & co-founded the Niagara Movement. He descended from Edith Fossett, Thomas Jefferson’s enslaved chef. His father was a Civil War lieutenant.

Amanda Smith was born enslaved in 1837, acquired an education, preached her beliefs, traveled the world, & established an orphanage in Illinois in 1899 that became a school. She traveled to England (with her daughter), India, & Liberia & published an autobiography in 1883.
