This wknd, we remember two giants of the modern Civil Rights movement, born w/in a day of each other: Julian Bond (Jan 14, 1940) & Martin Luther King (Jan 15, 1929). They are linked not just by the coincidence of the calendar, but also by a common commitment to social justice. 1/

William Trotter graduated Harvard magna cum laude in 1895. He founded the Boston Guardian, the Boston Historical & Literary Association, & co-founded the Niagara Movement. He descended from Edith Fossett, Thomas Jefferson’s enslaved chef. His father was a Civil War lieutenant.

On Christmas Eve 1855 enslaved teenagers from Loudon County, Virginia fended off slave patrollers as they made their escape to freedom in Philadelphia. This image, “A Bold Stroke for Freedom,” is housed in the Library of Congress.

Yellow, a color symbolic of perfection and transcendence, serves as an artistic extension of the artist's affection for the singer.

Amanda Smith was born enslaved in 1837, acquired an education, preached her beliefs, traveled the world, & established an orphanage in Illinois in 1899 that became a school. She traveled to England (with her daughter), India, & Liberia & published an autobiography in 1883.

Hours are changing for the break! From Dec 23 through Jan 1, all libraries will be closed; some will be closed beginning Dec 16. All will reopen on Tuesday, Jan 2 ... and the renovated library will open to the public on Monday, Jan 8!
