On this day in 1955: Henry Ford II donates $80K to help build Lafayette Park, a gentrification project. Community had formerly been known as Black Bottom and had been largely African American and poor. Mayor Albert Cobo razed Black Bottom. Blacks called it "Negro removal."

On this day in 1964: James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner are murdered in Mississippi during an effort to register voters. Detroit lawyers Anna Diggs, Claudia Shropshire and George Crockett Jr. are also there working to help Blacks secure the right to vote.

On this day in 1943: Detroit riot continues. Starts after an altercation between African Americans & whites on Belle Isle. Detroit Tribune, a Black weekly, reports Roy Jackson is fatally shot in the back by cops. Police suspected he was looting. Jackson attempted to flee.
