NIH is legally prohibited by the Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2024 from changing indirect-cost rates across the board without the approval of Congress. This will be immediately challenged in court.

Cutting NIH funds hurts all Americans. Why? Three main reasons: #1: These funds support a huge industry in all 50 states. For every $1 of NIH funding generated, there is a short-term return of ~$2.46 in economic activity1. The $4B in cuts will take away $10B from the economy.

Science and art offer complementary approaches to achieving a deeper understanding of life, and the exchange between the two can be very fruitful. Check out the fantastic work of Maximilian Prüfer, who lets insects express themselves in his art: maximilian-pruefer.com

Approach seems interesting, but 2 issues if the goal is for a practical reason to define Life. 1. Selection bias of 68 experts 2. I would ask more specific questions, like "If you must claim the discovery of extraterrestrial life, what kinds of evidence would you present?"
