To those who pay attention to the movement of people this move was inevitable. A year ago OpenAI poached julia villagra from HRT (Hudson River Trading) to head people. A few months later OpenAI is coming after quant talent, and Anthropic followed yesterday. This is just the beginning.

I think I made an under-appreciated point here. The top quant firms study exactly the same problems as OAI/Anth: scaling, architectures, hparam transfer, inference time. Just instead of text/images, they look at market data, and instead of product-market fit, they make money.

I can definitely sympathize with this, you should enjoy what you do! Different people like different things. But everyone in academia told me that I'd feel unfulfilled in trading because of the "lack of meaning". I've never had more fun in my life!

i work on problems I love with great colleagues, and my work life balance is much better than at a frontier ai lab. i achieved this milestone much faster than i would have in ai fighting with reviewers, with higher likelihood, and fully in cash wtf are you talking about?

The valuations of Thinking Machines, Perplexity, and SSI legitimately make no sense in a world where compute is paramount, OpenAI/Anth are so far ahead, and Google/Meta are commoditizing the low end.

your average tech bro: i could never work in finance because it’s too zero sum. i’d much rather melt an entire generations brains by optimizing the YouTube shorts recommendation algorithm

A great example of if you can't figure out how your competitor is making so much money, maybe it's fraud cnbc.com/2025/07/04/ind…
